Tech Tuesday: Fuel Tank Tech

Welcome to Tech Tuesday. The way this works is simple. I bring up a topic related to off roading in some way, ask questions, get feedback, basically interview you guys. If you have something useful to say, add it, if not, just read.

Fuel Tank Tech

What is fuel tank?

cybrfire

Quite simply, an enclosed container for storage of fuel.

What sizes do they come in?

cybrfire

Ummm…. All of them.

How hard is it to install?

cybrfire

The right size is not a problem to install.

What parts do I need?

cybrfire

Usually held in by some sort of strap all though not necessarily. Depends on how your fuel tank is retained.

What about aftermarket tanks?

cybrfire

Hundreds of them.

Why do they make plastic ones?

cybrfire

The idea behind a plastic tank is, in a serious accident, it is possible that they may bend, buckle or otherwise change shape without necessarily cracking and spilling their contents.

Is the tank the same for fuel injected and non fuel injected trucks?

cybrfire

Tank itself is generally the same or not so different that it causes concern. It’s the attachments or assembly that the tank has attached too it that make the difference, ie. fuel lines, pumps and so forth.

Are diesel, gas, and propane tanks all the same?

cybrfire

Same as previous with gas and diesel but propane is all together different.

Tech Tuesday: Welding On The Trail

Tech Tuesday this week is on Trail Welding, please click the link below to read the discussion, offer feedback, or even toss out a question or two you might have.

Tech Tuesday: Welding On The Trail

Welding On The Trail

What is an on board welder?
Why should I get get one?
What does it do?
How hard is it to install?
What parts do I need?
How about the old method using two batteries?
Can I make a DIY version of the premier power welder?

bggrnchvy

I carry a set of jumpers, grounding cable and a stick electrode holder. If you jump a set of batteries together and put the stick and ground on opposing terminals on opposite batteries you have enough voltage and amps to create an arc.

I also have a couple pounds of 6010 and 7018 rod to weld up whatever steel break needs attention. So far I’ve used it to fix a tie-rod clamp and broken u-joint yoke.

To weld I have a cheapy helm and a set of old welding gloves to stay safe.

Always remember to grab the fire extinguisher from inside of your rig and keep it nearby while welding so as to keep from starting forest/brush fires and rig fires.

It’s not the best solution but it offers great cost/benefit.

cbbr

I have borrowed a Readywelder which is very convenient - MIG welding with flux core on the trail. Easy and fast, but not the cheapest.

Tech Tuesday: What Makes The Perfect Garage?

Tech Tuesday this week is on The Perfect Garage, please click the link below to read the discussion, offer feedback, or even toss out a question or two you might have.

What Makes The Perfect Garage?

What makes the Perfect Garage?
What types of benches, shelving, & organizers do you have in yours?
How hard is it to install or build these units?
What about lifts?
What materials & hardware do I need?
Where can I get these materials cheap?
What about floor coatings, wiring, lighting, et
What ideas, tips and tricks can you share?

MrK5

Portable bandsaw! Love that thing.
Welder for sure.
4.5″ angle grinder
Jackstands
Floorjack
Gotta have at least one good work bench (doesn’t need to be 6′x24′ like ours )
It’s nice when you can get a collection of scrap steel.

filo

vice, cordless tool set, beer, air compressor, hand grinder/sander, beer, more jack stands, beer, hmmmmm I’ve seen this before……………………………oh, and 4×4.

cbbr

Refrigerator, Radio, TV with a cable drop…..

Lots of work space and light.

VegasBruce

drill press, tall ceilings

mrs filo

Lots of storage and bench space.
Bench space that is both regular work and welding compatible (laminate/wood bad when welding - fire bad - melting bad)
Moveable work spaces (small benches on castors)
Bansaw/tube bender/table saw/welder/heavy duty vices/large roll away toolchest/air compressor
small storage drawers for small do dads collected over the years
rafter storage
furnace
window air
good bright lighting
The ability to put crap away so car can be pulled in garage during winter since it is technically still a garage.
good locks on door and garage doors

Ultimate wish: bathroom and fridge so house wouldn’t get dirty when working out in garage/shop.

ThaMule

All those things mentioned above are great. i want some 14 foot doors too so I know I can always get everything in it. Also would like a loft with a bed and a desk with a computer so I can look up info without going in the house and sleep out there when the wifey is mad! I cant believe no one has said they wanted a nice shiny pole right in the middle to anchor stuff too!!!! Yeah…thats what I am going to say its for anyways

4×4dudester

-Nice and big!

-A good lift like a BendPak:BendPak, Inc. Four Post Lifts, Two Post Lifts, Alignment Lifts, Automotive Lifts, Pipe Benders, Air Compressors

-A huge air compressor.

-Solvent tanks are awesome.

-Overkill lighting

-A welding bench in addition to a super nice bench for everything else.

-Roll around shop/tool cart so you can set your tools and parts down when working.

-Roll around tool chest.(its nice to have two, one that you have your more common tools in and can roll around with you, and one for less common tools) Snap-on’s are pretty cool:Snap-on Tool Storage and Tool Boxes

And in my humble opinion painting shop floors is way over rated. All you need is a good concrete cleaner. If you haven’t guessed it already, this is more like a shop with a unlimited budget!
