Just yesterday i had my first major break. I completely snapped my passenger side axle shaft up front on my 06 sierra. This has made me realize that my truck is not a reliable wheeling machine. I am about to go to college, so i have limited funds and i do not have anything more than my own garage as a workplace. I have had many thoughts about selling it for a truck that comes with a solid front axle, like a dodge 2500 or something like that. I have also thought of buying a small car and an older chevy with sfa(that wont work because i will be in college up in virginia). last of all i have considered a SAS for my truck, but no one makes a kit for it and my fabrication skills are not great, though i want to learn.
Do yall have any thoughts, ideas, snide remarks? any advice would be great

First you should fill out your profile completely then we have an idea of skill levels and such. If you have a garage to work in you ahead of some of us that work outside.

Now a daily driver and a trail rig don't mix well. Wheel on Saturday, fix on Sunday, Drive to work on Monday gets old fast. If you want to wheel, find a budget wheeler to take out on weekends and keep the '06 as a driver/tow rig. Just my 2 cents.

Nice! I love primered trucks. Looks agressive like that... almost like the back alley thug.

you either have big tires on your truck or a heavy foot and a bad bind. Or all of the above. I wheel my 2000 sierra hard with 33's and don't break front shafts. I would replace the shaft and keep going. they are really easy to take out. if its not lifted you can take out the shaft with out doing anything else.

there are sas kits, look harder. I'll see if I can find something. they just did a write up in one of the major mags.

It was in Peterson 4 wheel, August '07. CAGE Offroad was the company but just says coming soon on their website. Seems like most of the stuff is designed for the 2500/3500 series
Back to the original question about making an ifs truck a dependable wheeler, I guess you've already answered that question. Having something you need for a daily driver and toy means you'll probably need to keep the wheeling pretty mild unless you enjoy breaking parts and spending money to fix them only to have them break again. How 'bout a newer Dodge Power Wagon, solid axle, winch, 33" tires stock, swaybar disconnect, lockers all make for a respectable starting point

Just replace the axle shaft and keep a spare around.
