Default Unanswered: XJ steering shaft conversion??

Register Now to remove most ads!
ok so I think I wanna do this, my rag joint is pretty worn out so it needs to be replaced anyway and Id rather go with this setup.

I know there's an article about it in the tech data base but it links to a thread on CK5 but im not a member there and it wont let me access it.

so anyway what im wondering is first off what all do I need? just the shaft and u-joints? anytihng else?

what years are compatible with this converstion?? like years x-y cheokee shaft will fit years a-c chevy.

anyone know of a good walkthrough step by steb type thing on how to do this? even if someone could copy the CK5 one and put it up here that would be great.

thanks in advance,
Kyle.

Hate to burst your bubble but if you still have the original '76 column in your truck then this is a no go. You need to have a '80 or newer style column for the xj shaft to fit due to it is a d-bar style shaft and the early columns have a splined end where the intermediate shaft attaches. I ran into this on my '74 k5 but was able to still get a replacement ragjoint from Napa. I put an XJ shaft in my '90 crew cab b/c the joint was pretty wasted and it was a pretty simple swap.
Hope that helps a little

There was a guy on ck5 that changed the XJ shaft over to have a splined end. I will see if I can find it when I have some time.
