Shrug Unanswered: High RPMs and Low Power.

I just picked up a 1995 Isuzu Trooper -v6, it is not a 4x4 but I was referred here to see if anyone is aware of what could be causing this problem.

It is a 5 speed manual and a few times even in first gear I seem to have high RPMs but it seems like it does not have any power and has the same problem in all the other gears as well.. I was able to get it upto 65 on the freeway but it took awhile to reach it because if i applied more gas it only seemed to just rev up the rpms but not make the vehicle move faster. I was able to slowly increase speed by keeping the rpms at a decent lower range but had no pick up as it has normally. It just feels like it's a lumbering giant.

Today it was working fine until I got gas, when I restarted it I also had the A/C on too and then started to act like a lumbering giant. When I started it back up after work, it was back to normal.

Can something with the a/c system being on while starting be turning on this Lumbering Giant mode?

Or is it something else?

Or am I just changing gears improperly?

Thanks.

It sounds to me like your clutch is shot and is slipping. You mentioned that the engine doesn't have any power. When in neutral does the engine sound OK? Does it rev up normally? I'm guessing you mean that the engine is fine, but it doesn't get the power to the ground to accelerate.
A bad clutch will act up more when it is warm/hot. That would explain it having problems after a short stop compared to after being at work for a while.
If you aren't sure, most transmission shops will check out your vehicle for free. Keep in mind, they do it to get your business. But you can say "no thank you" and leave. Then you have an educated opinion.
good luck

Could be quite a few things.

Fuel starvation, low voltage, poor ignition / spark gap, come to mind. I think I'd start with a basic tune up and go from there.

What happens when you mat the gas pedal, rolling in 1st gear?

If the rpms go up quickly, but the truck accelerates much slower, then your clutch is either slipping, or out of adjustment.

Well I guess i should just do that.. but it's not all the time that it does that so if I take it in, chances are that it will act fine for them.. think the clutch can be just out of adjustment like another poster mentioned or it's slipping from time to time because it's going bad? Most of the time it seems fine.

Here's a site with the 95 Isuzu clutch parts schematic. http://www.myisuzuparts.com/1995/657/2/X/sitemap.html

I don't know enough about hydraulic clutches to give a good answer but I wonder if a failing clutch "master cylinder" could be part of the problem?

Well, a worn out clutch will act worn out all the time. Usually the same for a clutch out of adjustment. I assumed that it slipped when warm and didn't when cold. But if it is more random than that, then it's not the clutch.
Can you figure out when it acts up? When the engine is warm, cold, accelerating, when wet (raining) out, etc.
If it acts up only when it feels like it and there is no pattern to it (like stated above) then it sounds more like electrical in the engine. (spark, ground, sensor, etc.)
The more info you can give us the better we can try to help.
