To keep a truck registered as a truck? Say I wanted a tube frame, how much do I need to keep to make it legal? Mikey, you there?

Your question is a little vague, are you talking about replacing your frame with a tube frame or building a truggy/buggy/tube thing?

Technically, the only chunk of frame you need is the chunk with the VIN# stamped into it. If the rest of the truck is street legal, you shouldn't have a problem. If you have inspections, make sure your platform meets the required specs, and you're good to go.

If you're building something like I am, there's no point in keeping it. Even if you neglect to tell your insurance company and and the state about what you're doing, if you get pulled over you're probably just as screwed whether it's registered and insured or not.

That said, mine is registered and insured as an '89 blazer and will stay that way so I don't get thrown in jail if I decide to drive 2 blocks to get to the gas station from the campground.

I would think your biggest issue might come if you're doing emissions. They'll want the VIN to do that. You might try talking to the highway patrol. I would say 70jimmy might be able to provide input, but it'll be base on Colorado law.

the truck is already registered, so no more emissions cheking. I am keeping it street able and legal, I just want to make the frame stronger and more ridged. I might just box the frame

I've been thinking it would be easier to have a factory frame from which to build everything off. I guess it depends on how extreme you're going. If you're re-engineering everything you might as well start from scratch.
