North shore of Lake Ponchatrain. Leaving out of the Big Branch Refuge you can wade fish or shallow water boat (think paddle) for quite a way. Trout, redfish, sheepshead, flounder and crabbing are all good at times. Just watch for the alligators to your north and don't wade too deep because the bull sharks stack up when the water is salty enough.

Yep that's about what I was thinking.

If lived as close to the Gulf as you guys, I would definitely own a boat big enough to run off the coast. Now that would be run running around along there. When the hurricanes aren't around.

Yes and no. A boat big enough and reliable enough to safely fish blue water is expensive (think $25,000 used to start) and gas will kill you. They get, on average, less than 3 MPG. Blue water starts at 50 or so miles out.

To fish for coastal species, you really only need a way to the beach.
