Default Kayaks

Seems to be some interest, so lets talk kayaks.

Mine is a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 Angler. It is a great compromise between fast and stable with tons of storage. I have fished it in the Gulf of Mexico, several lakes, a couple of rivers and Lake Ponchartrain which is my favorite. It i fast enough for long paddles, but stable enough to stand and cast from for sight casting.

$900 or so unless you can catch last yeas model which should run around $700 new. But they are in CL all of the time for 1/2 that down here and since they are plastic, they are like new unless they have been stored in the sun.

My knowledge is limited. All I can tell you is that I picked up an old Tyne Fiberglass hull kayak for 20 bucks in Boulder. Never had it in the water, just hanging in my basement waiting for the day Gerri clears her "woman stuff" out of my man space.

IIRC it is between 15 and 16 feet long with clean, straight lines, wide and low. It has adjustable foot pegs down in the leg space but at full adjustment they still squink my legs up. The seat back is fiberglass and very uncomfortable. It's something that needs work if I keep it. The hull is open, no compartments, and has 2 inflatable bags that fit bow and stern.

I researched it and best I can tell it is early 70's tech. Which translates to drowning.

Fill the bags and it should float. If you still drown....

It's working again.

How about some Yak recommendations & places to find good deals online.

Give us a lesson on river kayaking vs open water kayaking.

Also do you practice rolling & recovery in yours?

Best deals I see are on Craigslist because people buy them and don't use them. If you find one on a BB that is kayak oriented, they know what the yaks are worth - just like truck parts.

Mine is a sit on top, so the emergency procedure is "swim around and collect your chit that is floating away (rods, tackle, etc). Everything is either tied, leashed or has a float on it.

Mine is also not made for white water - you need a "playboat" or whitwater kayak for that and those are the sit-in with a skirt boats. A sit on top is great for ocean/lake/slower water and is generally very stable, but is not maneuverable enough for rapids.
