Default Trying to save on gas money to get to Napa, any ideas?

Branndon and I are heading up to Napa, California next month. We plan to take our dog, Tobey, and camp a couple places on the way along the coastline. Then stay at a hotel for two nights, head to Sacramento and visit a friend for a few more days. Then head back, maybe camping along the way. The problem is we don't know what to do about saving on how to get there.

Google Maps says it's 424 mi – about 6 hours 31 mins.

We have a gas guzzler '99 Chevy Tahoe that gets 12 mpg. So that's 35 gallons of gas to get there, then 35 back. 70 gallons at $3.75/gal is over $250. And that doesn't include side trips.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas. We can rent a Prius or something, but don't know if that would help (7 days rental + gas). We can borrow Branndon's mom's Toyota Rav4 which gets 20 mpg. We can forgo the camping and take a train, but what about the dog...

If anyone has any ideas, or experience with any of this, please let us know. We just spent everything we had on the new scooter to save us on gas around town (not freeway legal).

Borrow the RAV and drive it easy, you cut your costs in half.

That's what we are leaning to, just seeing if there was a better way. Thanks for the input. By the way, I don't think we've met. I'm Brianne, Branndon's wife.

The Rav4 looks like the best option.

Too bad ya'll don't live a little closer. I'd loan my truck even though it only gets 17mpg. I could drive my old turd for a week w/o problems

Oh and goodluck on the trip. Take plenty of pics

Do the rav 4 or it would be one heck of a bike ride. LOL... The cost to rent a vehicle plus insurance would be alot of money as well. Other option would be Amtrack out of Santa Ana. Not sure about the animal thing. Oh and Amtrack will take you a while to get up there. Last time i rode from santa ana to Pismo it took like 6 or 7 hours when you can drive it in 4- 4 1/2
