What is a PTO?

Acronym for Power take off.

Why should I get it?

A solution for applying power to another vehicle mounted accessory. Such as a winch or air compressor or other types of things.

What does it do?

Transmits power to an accessory from a gear box whether that gearbox be a transmission or transfercase.

How hard is it to install?

Not difficult. Basically you remove a cover an bolt the PTO in its place. It's hooking up the accessory that is the hard part.

What parts do I need?

PTO.

What are some things that I can drive with a PTO?

Winch, air compressor, hydraulic pump etc. etc.

Where are PTO ports found?

manual transmissions have them as well as many transfercases. Look for the 6 bolt flat cover. I have no idea as to what specific models though. SM465's for sure as well as NP205's and I believe NP 203's. Can't remember for certain though.

A side note, most PTO's on these types of gearboxes can only be engaged when the gearbox is not in gear. Or in otherwords, your PTO don't work when your clipping down the road.

It's on the driver side of the case, square cover w/ 6 bolts. Under the grease.

I have a PTO winch on my Nodwell. It is a 10,000 lb braden. I havent used it much because I cant get my Nodwell stuck. There is a cable that goes to the dash, I push it in it plays cable out I pull it it pulls it in. There is also a lever on the winch for freespool good luck getting it to freespool tho. The drivetrain in it is a 300 straight 6 ford with a standard transmission about 8 foot driveshaft and a bizarre differential with cutting brakes (that I need to fix) I'll add a pic:
